Mind modulation – The Buddhist kind

Mind modulation has been there in subtle form in almost every religion, in every part of the world, and for ages. But, probably it is in India that one finds recorded forms of direct, explicit, and well thought of modulation techniques that are being practiced for thousands of years.

Early Buddhist scriptures namely Tipitakas give an excellent overview of mind modulation techniques that are not only well defined but also well focused. Buddhists had an elaborate model of the mind – its structure and functioning - something that baffles even the modern brain scientists!

Buddha preaching his techniques
The basic premise of Buddhist practices is the following.
  • The mind which is not properly modulated is the root cause of all miseries
  •  It is possible to effort fully modulate the mind in the right direction
  • Completely ‘silencing’ the mind is the ultimate escape from all miseries
Buddha talked eloquently on how to modulate the mind to put it into an ‘indifferent’ state, that is unperturbed by miseries or allures of the material world. In the long run, Buddha claimed that this process can put an end to the apparently endless cycle of births and deaths – end to the ‘mother of all miseries’.
