Looking back (concluding Bhagavadgeetha)

For the past four and half months, we have been discussing various interesting topics from one of the most well known of the Indian scriptures namely the Bhagavadgeetha.

Friday, December 7, 2018

Which is the best path?

In the previous discussion we saw how all paths we have been talking about, lead to the same destination. But is any of these paths better than the others? Or are they all equally good?

NewBook: Was Jesus really in India?

I am happy to announce the release of my 18th book “Was Jesus really  in India? : Final verdict on the age old mystery”.

Four paths, same destination

In the past several weeks, I discussed mainly about the four paths talked about by Bhagavadgeetha – namely, the path of inquiry (Jnyaana Maarg), the path meditation (Yoga Maarg), the path of selfless service (Karma Maarg) and the path of devotion (Bhakti Maarg).

A casual reader of Bhagavadgeetha often gets confused. Each path seems to contradict the other. And some people have even criticized Bhagavadgeetha for this reason.

But actually, there is no contradiction. The paths are different. But they lead to the same destination namely, the ultimate realization.

How is that?

Devotion does not mean rituals

For many of us devotion means erecting some grand place of worship, wearing some religious attire, and making all pomp and show. Are these really needed?

Wednesday, November 28, 2018

What does one achieve by devotion?

The obvious outcome of selfless devotion to God is getting closer to God. Getting closer to God is fine. But is that all?

Friday, November 23, 2018

The path of devotion

Most of us are emotionally oriented. Emotions come naturally to us. The path of devotion is a natural option for emotional people who can’t follow other paths such as path of inquiry (Jnyaana Maarg), or path of selfless action (Karma Maarg), or path of Yoga or Meditation. How does one go about on this path of devotion?

Is any form of God as good as any other?

In the previous post we saw how all forms of God are expressions of the same single God. Naturally, one may ask – in that case, can I worship any form of God and attain the same results?

Friday, November 16, 2018

Which God is the best?

For a Christian, God means Jesus Christ. A devout Muslim swears that there is no God other than Allah. A Hindu is more flexible – he has a wide choice of Gods ;-)

Wednesday, November 14, 2018

Isn’t devotion irrational?

In the previous discussion, I said that devotion or Bhakti can be a good alternative to a person – a person who cannot follow intellectual pursuit, a person who cannot do selfless service, a person who cannot meditate – an optiion to make spiritual progress.

Devotion to some God is definitely a faith based concept. These days we come across many self claimed intellectuals who frown upon religious beliefs and faiths. They say that faith is the bane of all our present day ills. If that is the case, should we not discourage devotion that is faith based ?

Baby monkey or baby cat – which is easier?

You probably have noticed a baby monkey clinging on to its mother while the mother jumps from tree to tree. The mother is not at all concerned with the infant. It is the responsibility of the infant to take care of itself.

Compare this to what a kitten does. It just cries aloud for its mother and the mother comes running to protect it from any danger. The kitten does nothing to protect itself other than calling its mother.

Ultimate realization – how easy it is to attain?

In the previous post, we talked about what is meant by the ultimate realization which is worth attaining. But the million dollar question is “can anyone ever attain it?”

Higher level view of the Universe

In a previous post, we started with two approaches to understand the universe and the concept of universal identity. One is through concepts that can be comprehended by our senses and the mind. The other one is purely abstract and more or less beyond comprehension.

We discussed the former in the previous post. Now let us try to understand the other , namely the abstract view of the Universe.

Lower level view of the Universe

In the previous post, we started with two approaches to understand the universe and the concept of universal identity. One is through concepts that can be comprehended by our senses and the mind. The other one that is purely abstract and more or less beyond comprehension.

Friday, October 26, 2018

What is this universal identity?

After a brief detour from our original discussions on Bhagavadgeetha, let us come back. In a previous post we saw that at the culminating stage of meditation one attains ‘universal identity’. What is this universal identity?

Where is Kundalini ("Serpent power")?

Today, Yoga means a practice that revolves around the mystic force Kundalini. Most modern Gurus swear by various theories of this mythical force that is believed to be lying dormant in the human body, just waiting to be awakened.

BookTalk: Psychology behind Yoga

In today’s book talk I am going to discuss about my book “Psychology behind Yoga”.

Friday, October 19, 2018

Only determined effort can take you ahead

In the previous post, we saw how one can attain the ultimate goal of Yoga which is par excellence. But is it easy to attain that state?

Climax of meditation

How does one meditate?

Having seated in the way as described in the previous post, one goes ahead with meditation or Dhyana – the most important step of Yoga.

Wednesday, October 10, 2018

Asana – the most misunderstood word

Today, asana or body postures is projected as synonymous to Yoga. If one studies the history of Yoga, it is easy to see that it is a more recent phenomenon – hardly a couple of centuries old - as compared to thousands of year long history of Yoga.

Meditation – Important things you need to know

From today, I am going to start a new series of posts, once in two weeks. It is about some interesting bits connected with my books.

Friday, October 5, 2018

Preparatory steps to Yoga of Krishna

Patanjali’s Yoga has in all 8 steps – Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana and Samadhi. Among these, the first 5 can be looked at as preparatory steps. Does Bhagavadgeetha also talk about these steps?

Wednesday, October 3, 2018

Yoga as it was

Today, various things are projected as Yoga. For majority of people, Yoga stands for various body postures and breathing exercises. For some, it is a technique to awaken the dormant power Kundalini within one’s body to attain mystic experiences or powers.

Meditation is the way to remain blissful

In the previous post we saw how a person can be in an ever blissful state by attaining the ultimate realization. But how does one attain this realization?

Wednesday, September 26, 2018

If all of us are souls, then why are we different ?

Each one of us is different in our own way. Some are very intelligent, some are dull headed, some may be arrogant and others may be even animal like.

If we are all souls, then why are we different?

Friday, September 21, 2018

How should one act?

In the previous post we saw that the root cause of problems created by action is not the action itself but wrong association - wrong association with the agent (i.e. the body) that actually performs the actions.

Wednesday, September 19, 2018

It is not the action that creates the problem

In the previous post we saw that any action creates problems irrespective of whether these actions are good or bad. At the same time, there is no way we can totally abstain from action! What is the way out?

Friday, September 14, 2018

Action or Inaction – which is better?

Actions produce results – good or bad. Though on the face of it, it may appear that actions that result in good are good, it is not so.

Wednesday, September 12, 2018

The best ritual

An action oriented person has a fancy for rituals. The Vedas describe several fire rituals called Yajnyas. These rituals are meant to provide a person with all material comforts as well as guarantee heavenly abode after death.

Yes. You too can make your own audiobooks almost free of cost

Thanks to many fellow writers in an author forum, I wrote up this quick article to alleviate some of the apprehensions many authors have about audiobook creation all on their own.

As many people, so many paths

As we saw in the previouspost, the three basic tendencies namely the Satwa, Rajas and Tamas motivate people to follow different paths.

Wednesday, September 5, 2018

Four types of people

One of the darkest blots on Hinduism is the caste system. This system has been thoroughly misused and has been a cause of lot of suffering during the long history of Hinduism.

How do we free ourselves from desires?

Before we can think of freeing ourselves from the trap laid by the desires, we need to first understand the modus operandi of the desires.

Why do people tread wrong path?

Probably everyone knows that our wrong actions ultimately lead us astray. And eventually we land ourselves in trouble. But why do we still indulge in wrong action – as if compelled by some force?

Friday, August 24, 2018

What happens when one leads a prudent life?

While warning about perils of leading a promiscuous life, Krishna understands that complete abstinence from pleasures is not possible.

Krishna has a sane and practical advice.

Wednesday, August 22, 2018

What is wrong with indulging in sense pleasures?

In today’s scenario with so much emphasis on enjoying worldly pleasures, if some Buddha. or Patanjali, or Krishna. or Jesus cautions against, nobody is going to listen. Most people consider that such advices are meant for people who have renounced the world.

Friday, August 17, 2018

How does one steady one’s mind?

"The desires for sense pleasures are so strong that they even derail a wise person who is striving to move on a righteous path. Giving in to these pleasures eventually creates mental unrest.

Who is a real Yogi?

Today, we see Yogis all around in myriad shades and colors –
  • with nicely shampooed well groomed long flowing hair, wearing heavily embroidered white satin gown;
  • with bald head covered by a colorful turban, wearing equally colorful designer outfit;
  • with well trimmed hair barring a pigtail, wearing fashionable jeans trousers and stylish tee-shirt; and so on.

Real Yoga

"Many a times we make some effort with some expectation. When we get what we sought for, we get elated and think ‘I have achieved’. But when we fail in our efforts, we get so depressed that we stop putting anymore efforts.

The soul is indestructible

"The physical bodies are perishable, But the soul that resides in these bodies is eternal and immutable. The soul never takes birth nor it ever dies. It is the body that takes birth and finally dies.

Inevitable truth of life

Water divining using psychic power

If you live in rural setting, you probably are familiar with people who claim to have magical powers to pin point the source of water deep beneath the earth without having to dig a well.
They are called water diviners.

Corrupting innocent minds

There is yet another self styled Guru who propagates mysterious practices and faiths, all in the name of Yoga.

Psychic power puts the Swami in trouble

I have great respect for Swami Vivekananda and the organizations he started. Most Swamis in these organizations tread the path of high ideals set forth by Vivekananda.

But unfortunately, of late I am seeing that some of the swamis are deviating from the original path.

Can pendulum really tell us what is good and what is bad ?

In the previous post we saw how we can use a pendulum to know which food items are good for us and which are bad.

Now let us slightly alter the experiment.

Wednesday, July 4, 2018

Pendulum can tell us what is good and what is bad

Many Yoga Gurus tell you that if you eat such and such food, it will help in Yoga practice and some other food are bad for Yoga.

Friday, June 29, 2018

How does the pendulum miracle work?

In the previous post we discussed a ‘miraculous ability’ all of us seem to have – ability to move inanimate objects by sheer ‘will power’

How were we able to move the object suspended at one end of the string without even touching it. We did no cheating. We did nothing to move it except mentally giving instructions that it seemed to obey!

Faith vs analytical thinking

For the past several weeks (in fact, for the past 3 months), I have been posting snippets from Bible (New testament), They give a glimpse of how great a master Jesus Christ was. In my view, they are the most important parts of Bible.

I have not spoken from myself

Yeshua said
“I have not spoken from myself, but The Father who sent me, He gave me commandments, what I will say and what I will utter.

Yohannan said to the crowds
Produce fruits worthy for repentance and do not start to say within yourselves, ‘Abraham is our father’, for I say to you that God can raise up from these stones children to Abraham.

Serve others

Yeshua’s disciples said to him
Grant to us, that one may sit at your right hand, and the other on your left, in your glory.”

Wednesday, May 23, 2018

Core values are important and not petty observances

Judeans adhered to some strict rules such as washing hands before one eats; taking bath after one comes back from a market place and so on.

Religion is for the sake of humanity and not the other way round

When Yeshua  went out on the Sabbath to a grain field, his disciples were walking and picking the ears of wheat.
And the Pharisees were saying to him, "Behold, why are they doing something that is illegal on the Sabbath?”

Thursday, May 17, 2018

Now you can listen to my books in my own voice

Many of us are too busy to sit and read a book. The best alternative that is becoming quite popular is to listen to audio versions of the books

Who will actually get benefited?

A sower went out to sow, But as he sowed,

Some seeds fell on the side of the road and a bird came and ate it.

Who are Yeshua’s real brothers and sisters?

While Yeshua was speaking to the crowds, his mother and his brothers came standing outside and desired to speak with him.

Anytime is right, for doing good

Yeshua came to the synagogue. He came across a  man  whose hand was withered. Yeshua sympathized with him and wanted to heal him.

Ramakrishna's fish stories

Ramakrishna - The mentor of Swami Vivekananda  - was well known for his penchant for fish preparations.  Fish used to show up in some of his well known similes as well. The one I liked the most and the one that is relevant to today's topic is as follows.
