The Power behind psychic powers

What is common between pendulum swinging, coconut toppling, dowsing, Ouija board readings, auto writing, and many such ‘psychic’ powers?

It may seem strange but it is true. It is just one of the mysteries of our mind – more precisely, that of a believing mind!.

If you believe that pendulum oscillates in a particular way, or the dowsing rod moves in a particular way, or the spirits answer your questions through the Ouija board or planchet, it does indeed happen!

But there is no ‘spiritualism’ or ‘energy’ involved there. It is just that our brain produces subtle muscular movements without our being conscious of the act. It is almost like some reflex action. And it is these fine involuntary muscular movements that are responsible for all these magic happenings. All that it requires is a firm belief and expectation which most of us seem to have in plenty ;-)

Long back in 1852 William Benjamin Carpenter uncovered this wonderful phenomena which is named after him – Carpenter effect or Ideomotor phenomenon. Many scientists and psychologists have shown that it is this phenomenon that is responsible for many so called ‘spiritual’ feats performed by many Gurus, illusionists and other fake people who dupe gullible masses.

If you now go back and see closely each of the miracles I have discussed in the previous posts, you will see how in each case there was a scope for ideomotor to come into play.

Even if you disregard these scientific findings as ‘some academic’ stuff, use analytical thinking, and in each case you will find the reason why these feats did not work in altered scenarios. I will not go into these details. In case of doubt or disagreement you can always write a comment below and I will try to answer.

That is the power of analytical thinking. That is the real ‘Psychic power’ that is sure to take us forward.

My intention in this series of posts is not so much to disprove these powers but to emphasize the need to develop analytical thinking. So next time when some Guru shows you a pendulum or a rosary and talks about ‘energies’, analyze critically whatever he says, and ask him questions till you are satisfied. Don't get duped.

If some Guru  says that 'analytical thinking is a barrier to spirituality' then beware of such Gurus!
