Corrupting innocent minds

There is yet another self styled Guru who propagates mysterious practices and faiths, all in the name of Yoga.

He not only displays weird ‘psychic powers’ but also promises to teach them to his disciples. One of his most well known powers is moving a de-husked coconut by shear mental power.

As shown in the figure, a coconut is placed on top of a stretched palm of some individual. The other individual – in this case, a young disciple of the Guru keeps staring at the coconut and makes hand gestures to suggest moving the coconut without even touching it.

After a while, the coconut does indeed move and roll down from the palm, to the amazement of the person who was holding it in his stretched palm, without any effort by him! Amazing, isn’t it?

Before we conclude that it is a clear proof of psychic powers, let us try a slightly different scenario. Instead of placing the coconut on a stretched palm, let us place it on a table. Let the boy now concentrate and try with all his psychic powers as long as he wants.

The coconut would not budge! Why? Think about it.

What worries me in this case is the fact that the Guru is not only spreading false beliefs but also corrupting young minds who go on to believe that they have some special powers and gradually lose all ability to logically reason.

Worst still, the Guru is creating another fake Guru who would continue his tradition of fooling people!
