ReplyDeleteI would like to know the difference between sleep and meditation in terms of effects on body..
Very briefly, sleep has two main stages - sleep with dreams and deep sleep. Deep sleep state has lot of similarities with samadhi of meditation in the sense that brain activities are almost stopped. But in samadhi stages one is still 'conscious' in terms of inner awareness.
DeletePlease see my book "How and why of Yoga and meditation" (https://books2read.com/HowAndWhyOfYoga)for a detailed discussion.
To look at it from another way, (since you mentioned effect on body) sleep has a soothing effect on the body - gives rest. Meditation if done properly, calms the mind and in the ultimate state is supposed to bring changes in the mental setup that can change the whole personality. In terms of Yoga, samadhi is supposed to undo some preset samskaras in the mind that drive one towards worldly pleasures.
DeleteI believe that regular meditation can even affect hormonal changes in the body, though this needs scientific validation. As per Yogis like Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, male meditators are supposed to develop less muscular body, lighter body, sweeter voice, pink shade in the skin and so on. Some of these could be due to hormonal changes.
But these are all effects that can be seen after prolonged practice of meditation. So no need to worry if at all ;-)
