QV10.....Why should one do charity?

Continuing our discussion on the five fundamental injunctions of Islam, today let us discuss the importance of charity.

Quran says that whatever we have, is a gift from God. He is the one who has provided us more than what we need. So, it is our duty to share parts of those gifts with others who are less fortunate and are in need. If we don’t, we will be wrong doers.

Yaa ayyuhal lazeena aamanoo anfiqoo mimmaa razaqnaakum min qabli ai yaatiya yawmul laa bai'un fee wa la khullatunw wa laa shafaa'ah; walkaa firoona humuz zaalimoon
O ye who believe! Spend out of (the bounties) We have provided for you, before the day comes when no bargaining (Will avail), nor friendship nor intercession. Those who reject faith they are the wrong-doers. (Quran 2.254)
When you do charity, it is better to do it without making any pomp and show. “Let the left hand not know what the right hand has given” – to quote Jesus Christ.

Never make the receiver feel that you have been generous with him. Never expect anything from him in return. Your reward will definitely be from God who knows whatever you do. And he will surely reward you without your asking for it.

Allazeena yunfiqoona amwaalahum fee sabeelillaahi summa laa yutbi'oona maaa anfaqoo mannanw wa laaa azal lahum ajruhum 'inda Rabbihim; wa laa khawfun 'alaihim wa laa hum yahzanoon
Those who spend their substance in the cause of Allah, and follow not up their gifts with reminders of their generosity or with injury, -for them their reward is with their Lord: on them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve. (Quran 2.262)

Even if you cannot conceal your act of charity, it is fine. But never belittle the receiver. Never be harsh on him.

Quran says that it is better if you don’t give anything at all, than to insult the person who has received benefits from you. If you don’t want to donate, at least be kind to the person, speak affectionately with soothing words. God gets nothing by your charity. It is you who will be benefiting by the act of charity.

Qawlum ma'roofunw wa maghfiratun khairum min sadaqatiny yatba'uhaaa azaa; wallaahu Ghaniyyun Haleem
Kind words and the covering of faults are better than charity followed by injury. Allah is free of all wants, and He is Most-Forbearing. (Quran 2.263)

Charity is the other face of not amassing wealth. One should not hoard more than needed. But should share it with the needy.

All ancient religions talked against accumulating wealth. Accumulating wealth not only derails the person, but creates imbalance in the society by giving rise to deprivation.

When a rich man wanted to be a disciple, Jesus asked him to first donate whatever he had, to the needy. But the rich man was not prepared. He loved his wealth more than he loved God!

Buddha was once a crown prince. But he gave up all his wealth and went in search of a solution for misery in the world. Even after he found the solution, he did not return back to his palace, but continued his frugal life style. He did that to set an example for others.

But how many of modern teachers who amass wealth in the name of spirituality, are prepared to do that? On the contrary, they justify their greed for wealth, using clever words, and continue their empire building.
