Though very
strange, I have often observed this happening. Many a highly qualified
intellectuals get easily fooled by pseudo Gurus. I have always wondered why?
Is qualification not indicative of intelligence!
Some say that academic training doesn’t necessarily train a person to be better
in his/her judgments. Nor qualifications necessarily reflect intelligence!
May be true.
But there does seem to be some relation between one’s intellect and
gullibility.
Most pseudo
Gurus make vague suggestive statements that can be interpreted in more than one
way. More imaginative you are, more meaning you find in such statements. So, an
‘intelligent’ person is more likely to mine profound meaning in those fuzzy statements
than an ‘ordinary’ person! In a way such a person satisfies his/her intellect,
and falls easy prey to wrong judgment. Worse still, he/she identifies with the
inferences so made, and tries to convince others!
Probably,
that is one main reason.
