BookTalk: How and why of Yoga

I read this book with keen interest …. The author has succeeded in providing a comprehensive account on how Yoga can be effectively utilized in alleviating stress in a way common man can understand. The author has critically analyzed the role of mind-body interaction in the genesis of stress, and how Yoga helps in normalizing it…

These were the comments made by Professor Radhakrishnan a renowned neurologist who was formerly heading the Neurology department at Manipal University, about this book namely “How and Why of Yoga and Meditation”.

If that gives you an impression that this book deals with some highly academic topic, listen to the next comment by one elderly gentleman who characterizes himself as a ‘high school dropout’ -

“Your book reminded me of one of my school teachers who used to teach in such a way that we used to listen to him with all attention and interest. You have definitely made the book very interesting and easy to understand!”

Impressed by the contents, some of my Indian readers have even brought out an Indian edition of this book (of course with my permission) for raising funds for some charity they were working for. That was an interesting and useful effort.
This Indian edition is available for less than 3 dollars, while an equivalent International edition sells for around 20 dollars. In case you live in India or have friends in India, you can buy this full color paperback for as low as Rs. 175 (less than 3 dollars). Please click the link “Buy low cost print books” on the right side of my blog to purchase this book either from their online store or from amazon India. Even if you live outside India, you can try contacting them through their store and they may suggest you some way to get the book to your place.

That much about popularity ;-)

Now what is this book about?

What is this book about?

As the name itself suggests, it is all about Yoga and how exactly it works and why it works. I have focused mainly on Patanjali’s Yoga. But I have also covered other variants of Yoga that are also popular and may be useful.

In the first chapter, I have succinctly explained the neuroscientific basis of Yoga and why it works and the brain science behind its working. But I have tried to make it brief so that most readers who may not have a taste for intricate technical details, don’t find it threatening!

As everyone knows, Yoga does enhance health in addition to achieving high level spiritual goals. Most of our health problems are due to stress. Yoga adopts a three pronged strategy to address stress.

  1. Block the causes for stress.
  2. Fortify mental activities that alleviate the buildup of stress.
  3. Focus mental activities to not only minimize stress but also to result in overall improvement of mental makeup and performance.

I have devoted couple of chapters to discuss how Yoga achieves these goals.

Though Yoga postures or Asana as they are called, is not really a part of original Yoga of Patanjali, considering their popularity and potential in improving health in general, I have devoted one complete chapter on this aspect of popular Yoga. In this chapter I have given step by step method to perform some of the useful and easy Yoga postures with lot of illustrations and also their health benefits.

Actually, Yoga is more of a meditative discipline. So, I have devoted a couple of chapters to discussing various finer issues about meditation - how it is done, how it works, various stages one goes through, and neuro-scientific basis of each stage of progress.

Finally, the most interesting and probably the most beneficial chapter namely - “A 30 minute Yoga for everyone” sums it up. As some of my readers felt, this one chapter is the essence of the entire book and a very useful practical guide.

As you can see, I have tried to provide a good mix of theory and practice to cater for a wide audience. Depending on your interest, you can choose the area you are most comfortable with. The chapters are designed to be fairly independent. But I would urge you to take advantage of the entire discussion and get to know of Yoga better.
