QV19.....Faith cannot be forced on others

There are people who believe that Islam was spread at the point of a sword. There are even some Muslims, who think that their faith should be forced on others.

But Quran does not support these views. While it says that the faith that it propounds is definitely worth emulating, it does not advise imposing it onto others who may not willingly accept it.

“Laaa ikraaha fid deeni qat tabiyanar rushdu minal ghayy; famai yakfur bit Taaghooti wa yu'mim billaahi faqadis tamsaka bil'urwatil wusqaa lan fisaama lahaa; wallaahu Samee'un 'Aleem”
“Let there be no compulsion in religion: Truth stands out clear from Error: whoever rejects evil and believes in Allah has grasped the most trustworthy hand-hold, that never breaks. And Allah hears and knows all things.” (Quran 2.256)

Quran believes that the truth propounded by it, is self-evident. Whoever, accepts this truth is definitely going to be rewarded. They have surrendered themselves to God who is surely going to help them in their difficulties since God hears their problems, since he is omniscient.

Quran is for worshipping the one and only God who created this world, who nourishes this world and to whom this world would finally return. But there may be people who don’t accept this. They may be more inclined to worshiping a hoard of Gods which their ancestors have been worshipping.

What should be the attitude of a true Muslim towards such people?

Quran says that a true Muslim should say

“Laa a'budu ma t'abudoon
Wa laa antum 'aabidoona maa a'bud”

“I worship not that which you worship, nor will you worship that which I worship. (Quran 109.2, 109.3)

“Lakum deenukum wa liya deen”

To you be your way, and to me mine”. (Quran 109.6)

The idea is, try to convince the unbeliever to accept your way. But if he insists on going his way, then let him be on his own.

At any cost don’t force your beliefs on him. Not the least, use violence to force your views.

Unfortunately, some people believe in forcing their faiths. They don’t seem to really follow Quran.
